My favorite part of technical theater is costume making. Costumes help tell the story in more ways than one. They can explain whether a character is rich or poor, young or old, or even hint at parts of the character’s personality. Because audiences do not notice the costumes, I believe they are often undervalued but as much work is put into them often with as many difficulties as the set build. Another reason I enjoy costume production so much is because of the creative freedom that comes with it There can be many ways to interpret a play and every person’s designs for it might be different. There is not really a right or wrong way to design a costume, which gives the creator endless possibilities. Once I’m given a few guidelines on what needs to be made I love experimenting and discovering what will look best without worrying if it’s wrong.
