Why Theatre?

Technical theater can be a challenge, which is part of the reason I love it so much. Every new costume and set piece is a new puzzle to figure out and put together. I love starting with a few planks of wood or some yards of fabric and being able to build and create until those materials have become something tangible and impressive. With each new project comes another set of challenges, and although it can be frustrating, figuring out the solutions is extremely satisfying.

My Favorite Part

My favorite part of technical theater is costume making. Costumes help tell the story in more ways than one. They can explain whether a character is rich or poor, young or old, or even hint at parts of the character’s personality. Because audiences do not notice the costumes, I believe they are often undervalued but as much work is put into them often with as many difficulties as the set build. Another reason I enjoy costume production so much is because of the creative freedom that comes with it There can be many ways to interpret a play and every person’s designs for it might be different. There is not really a right or wrong way to design a costume, which gives the creator endless possibilities. Once I’m given a few guidelines on what needs to be made I love experimenting and discovering what will look best without worrying if it’s wrong.
